Factors Influencing Preferred Retirement Lifestyle of Babyboomers

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the ideal retirement lifestyle of babyboomers and to explore the factors influencing boomer`s preferred lifestyle type. Proportional quota sampling method was used to recruit respondents based on the population of 15 area of South Korea. A total of 1,019 babyboomers who were born in years of 1955 to 1963 were used for the analysis. Preferred retirement lifestyle was classified into ``work``, ``volunteer``, and ``leisure activities`` and the effects of socio-demographic, financial, family caregiving burden, health, and other related variables were examined by multi-nominal regression analysis. Results showed that the most-preferred retirement lifestyle of boomers was ``leisure activities`` and followed by ``work`` and ``volunteer``. Results indicated that women were more likely to choose ``volunteer`` and ``leisure activities`` as ideal type whileas men preferred to work. Higher income was associated with ``volunteer`` type rather than ``work`` type. Boomers who have less financial burden of educational expenditure for their children are likely to expect ``work`` type. Those who do not have any disease preferred the ``volunteer`` and ``leisure`` type to ``work¡®. However, better self-rated health status was related with ``work`` type. Positive perception toward the retirement have positive effects on the preference of ``volunteer`` and ``leisure`` activities. This study could provide the basic information for the strategies establishment toward the forthcoming an aging society and babyboomer retirement. At the same time, results of the study could be utilized for the practical intervention for successful aging of boomers.
